Mediums
In this section I will try to explain what exactly is a medium.
A medium is someone who can communicate with the spirit world. This is done in three ways.
Through Clairvoyance which means Clear Seeing and is where the medium sees the spirit person either with their eyes or more usually in their minds eye.
Clairaudience which means Clear Hearing is where the medium can hear spirit voices and can communicate their words, again the spirit voices are usually heard internally rather than out loud.
Finally there is Clairscentience which means Clear Sensing and most mediums use this faculty to sense when spirit people are close to them. They can also sense how a spirit person died and feel specific ilnesses that the spirit person may have suffered from. This sensing of spirit is usually the first of the three senses to become noticeable.
Mediums are not fortune tellers and Clairvoyance should not be confused with Divination and other forms of psychic work.
Spiritual Readings
A spiritual reading is an opportunity to attempt to make contact with relatives or friends from the spirit world and to try to bring through information from them to prove that they are still around us and care about us. The information can include personal details about them, memories that would only be known to the person having the reading, and sometimes specifics such as names, addresses and details that prove the spirit person is communicating.
All readings are impossible to predict and there is never any certainty as to what information will be received if any from the spirit world. A medium can not summon any particular person to communicate as the decision as to who communicates from the spirit world is not the mediums to make. The spirit world have their own reasons as to why this is so.
The following information is from the SNU guidance notes on spiritualist readings and may be helpful if you are considering a spiritual reading.
Spiritualists believe that any attempt to communicate with Spirit is, by its very nature, experimental and therefore results can never be guaranteed.
Will I have my fortune told?
Most definitely not! Spiritualist mediums do not "tell fortunes." What they will do is attempt to provide you with evidence of the survival of the human soul after death. Sometimes your spirit friends will give their opinions and advice to help you in your life but our mediums avoid giving the sort of information that 'fortune tellers' tend to give.
Is it frightening?
Because of preconceived ideas and misinformation in the media some find going to see a medium as frightening. But our mediums will reassure you that there is nothing to worry about. The people in the spirit world, who communicate with you, are, in the main, people who knew you and cared for you when they were alive on earth, there is no reason why you should be frightened of them.
What if they tell me something I don't want to know?
Spirit people communicate in terms of truth and love, therefore generally they will not tell you anything that is going to worry or upset you and our mediums are taught to be very careful with the information that they pass on.
Can they tell my future?
Because spirit people are unburdened by physical minds and material influences, they can sometimes take a much broader and long-sighted view of the likely outcome of our actions. Then, of course, they will try to make us aware of these likely situations before they arise.
Does a medium know everything about me?
The medium generally knows absolutely nothing about you before the sitting begins. Some mediums will be able to 'sense things psychically' about you, such as your health, emotional state etc., but during the sitting the medium will only know those facts about your life that the Spirit people choose to tell them. However, your Spirit friends will respect your privacy and any information of a very private or personal nature will not be revealed, unless it is important to the communication. Our mediums keep absolutely all information they receive as confidential, and anyway much of what they say is soon forgotten by them after a sitting has ended.
Should I think about the person I want a message from?
You can if you wish, sometimes this can be helpful as the bond of love between you and your spirit friends can be a strong connecting link. But Spiritualists stress that there is absolutely no guarantee that a message from any particular individual will come through. Remember mediums are completely dependent upon the wishes of the Spirit people to communicate. Mediums cannot "call them up", it is spirit who decide whether to communicate or not. Generally, concentrating or the desire to have a specific person communicate is not recommended as it can limit the ability of other spirit people who are there to talk with you.
Is there anything I can do to make my sitting more successful?
Keep an open mind. Try not to limit your thoughts to one or two people, your message could be from pretty well anyone you have known, or even people who passed over before you were born. Be honest with the medium, if you can't understand a part of your message, say so, and the medium will try to clarify it for you. Be honest with yourself, don't say 'No' just to be awkward, and don't say 'Yes' just to be helpful. As far as you can have hopeful, positive and friendly thoughts toward the medium and those spirit people who do come to communicate to you.
